Everybody’s surfing… Surfing Watergate Bay

Like people, waves differ massively. Each wave that you try to navigate offers a different set of challenges, which is why it really is the sport of kings.

Therefore, when you get the opportunity, you should embrace the challenge and try surfing.

The North Coast of Cornwall offers the most beautiful expanse of beaches. The fierce Atlantic Ocean gives the beaches a beautiful quality of sand. Fistral and Watergate Bay are notoriously superb for hitting the waves. Both beaches have hosted the Boardmasters and have been said to rival the waves off Bondi Beach, Australia.

So why surf? It offers so much challenge, which is where we grow as people. A little bit of fear teaches us about ourselves. And surfing is hard. It’s notoriously one of the hardest sports on the planet.

But most recently, a BBC article revealed how surfing has had a positive effect on mental health. A new phenomenon called ‘Blue Health’ found a positive link between emotional wellbeing and the sea.

You really can’t beat the buzz of catching a wave, managing to get to your feet and surfing that wave to the shore. That’s just the start…

Then, you can start to really navigate the wave, turning and manoeuvring the board and finding synergy with nature. What a rush!

But the biggest appeal has got to be the characters who inhabit the ‘surfer dude’ mentality. I’ve yet to meet a stressed surfer. Their carefree, relaxed attitude to life is contagious. No stress, no deadlines, no phones. Just you and the sea.

Therefore, when you’re near the coast and you get the chance, invest in some surf lessons. Treat yourself to three, if you’ve got the time.

Soak up the sun, surf and ride those waves. It’s the cheapest therapy you’ll ever receive.
